WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING?
Dry needling, also known as trigger point dry needling (TDN), is a therapeutic technique used to relieve muscular pain and dysfunction.
A dry needling treatment involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into myofascial trigger points - tight, hyper-irritable knots within muscle tissue that can cause pain, stiffness, and restricted movement. By targeting these trigger points, dry needling helps reset dysfunctional muscle patterns, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility.
When the needle is inserted into a trigger point, it can cause a brief twitch response—a natural reflex that signals the muscle is relaxing. This process helps to interrupt pain signals, reset nerve pathways, and enhance overall function. Many clients experience immediate or progressively increasing relief after treatment, making dry needling a powerful tool for addressing chronic pain, muscle tightness, and movement restrictions.

DRY NEEDLING FAQ
Does dry needling hurt?
The experience of dry needling varies for each individual, but for most, the discomfort is minimal and short-lived. The needles used are extremely thin, much finer than those used for injections or vaccinations, so the initial insertion is often barely felt.
Once the needle reaches a trigger point or tight muscle band, you may feel a mild ache, a deep pressure, or a twitch response—a quick, involuntary muscle contraction. This twitch response is actually a good sign, indicating that the muscle is releasing tension and resetting.
Some areas of the body may be more sensitive, and sensations may include:
-
A dull, cramping feeling when the needle engages the muscle.
-
A light prick or no sensation at all in less tense areas.
-
A mild twitch response, which can feel like a quick muscle jump.
Most clients find the benefits of reduced pain and improved movement far outweigh any temporary sensations during treatment.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
No significant downtime is required. Some people feel immediate relief, though it’s common to feel soreness similar to post-workout muscle fatigue, which typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. You can return to daily activities, but it’s recommended to stay hydrated, avoid intense exercise for 24 hours, and stretch gently to maximize benefits.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes, dry needling is safe when performed by a trained practitioner. The needles are sterile, single-use, and inserted with precision to minimize risks. Mild soreness or bruising may occur, but usually subsides quickly. Serious side effects from dry needling are extremely rare when performed by a trained practitioner.
How is dry needling different from acupuncture?
While both use thin needles, dry needling is rooted in Western medicine and neurophysiology, and focuses on releasing myofascial trigger points to relieve pain and improve function. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and aims to balance energy flow.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies based on individual needs. Some clients experience relief after one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments for long-term improvements. Your practitioner will create a plan tailored to your goals.
Is dry needling covered by insurance?
Currently, dry needling is not covered by most insurance plans in Canada, and we do not offer billing to insurance for dry needling treatments.
Can I combine dry needling with massage?
At Bodhi Wellness, we offer dry needling as a standalone treatment - it is not performed during a massage therapy session. However, if you would like to book a massage during the same visit, you are welcome to schedule both treatments back-to-back as separate appointments.
Massage and dry needling complement each other beautifully. Dry needling targets deep myofascial trigger points to release muscle tension at its source, while massage helps to increase circulation, promote relaxation, and enhance overall tissue recovery. Many clients find that receiving a massage after dry needling helps further reduce soreness, improve mobility, and maximize the benefits of both treatments. If you’re interested in combining dry needling with a massage, our front desk team can help coordinate your appointments for a seamless experience.
